#IWD: Interview With A Vegan Queen: Katie Hartley
In collaboration with Badass Vegan Women, we are bringing you a fortnightly+ series of interviews with inspiring vegan women across the globe. Sign up to our newsletter so you don’t miss a single Interview With A Vegan Queen®.
Badass Vegan Women is a non-profit organisation with a mission to celebrate, promote and uplift vegan women and those who identify as female for the work they are doing in and out of the vegan community. We want to shine light on their achievements, empower them as Badass Vegan Women and work to inspire women worldwide.
We're continuing the #internationalwomensday celebrations with our series of inspiring vegan women. Today we're talking to Katie Hartley who open up Humblest of Pleasures, a dreamy vegan cafe in Hebden Bridge less than a year ago.
The eatery has gone from strength to strength in its first year, we spoke to Katie about the experience of setting up her own business and advice she has for other women looking to do the same.
1. What advice would you give to any young women out there looking to work for themselves or start up something of their own?
You only have to look around and see how many amazing women are absolutely owning it right now. Only ten months ago I was in the position where I was worried whether my idea was going to take off and if people were going to like it. It’s so scary stepping out into the big wide world and putting yourself in a position where you can be criticised, but boy, its worth it. My advice would be to go for it, surround yourself with positive people who are willing to push you, put all of your heart int it and make it the best it can be. (P.S. It’s okay to fake it until you make it!)
2. Tell us something you’re proud of achieving.
I’m proud (and overwhelmed at times!) of the positive reaction my cafe has had in my local town. For such a little town, Hebden Bridge sure has a lot to offer. We have our fully vegan cafe, a veggie cafe, vegan-friendly bakeries and a vegan bakery! I’m extremely proud to be a part of the community here.
3. Who are some of your favourite inspiring females?
I am surrounded by strong women in my everyday life, and I’m am lucky enough to now be working alongside the majority of them daily. A lot of the women who have inspired me to push myself are women I’ve met on social media. There are so many amazing women who not only own and run their own businesses tirelessly but also have babies to raise, (Nadine - Temple Coffee/Red Temple Prayer), musicians who are killing it (Lucinda Livingstone, Kate Flynn) artists who are paving their own way in the creative world (Rosie Evans, Ashleigh Wood), activists who are standing up for those who don’t have a voice (Katy Slater, Rehana Jomeen) and of course the amazing Bright Zine ladies!
4. Can you tell us about any upcoming projects?
We have a brand new menu launching this Friday! A few items are being revamped to make them extra incredible but we’re also adding a few new items that we are very excited about.
Follow Humblest of Pleasures on Instagram for more, and visit them at 35 Market St, Hebden Bridge HX7 6EU.
