#IWD: Interview With A Vegan Queen: Roxy Pope, So Vegan
In collaboration with Badass Vegan Women, we are bringing you a fortnightly+ series of interviews with inspiring vegan women across the globe. Sign up to our newsletter so you don’t miss a single Interview With A Vegan Queen®.
Badass Vegan Women is a non-profit organisation with a mission to celebrate, promote and uplift vegan women and those who identify as female for the work they are doing in and out of the vegan community. We want to shine light on their achievements, empower them as Badass Vegan Women and work to inspire women worldwide.
For the past week, we've celebrated #internationalwomensday with a series of interviews with amazing and inspiring vegan women. Today in the last of the series we're talking to Roxy Pope, YouTube star and one half of So Vegan.
Roxy and her partner Ben make beautiful YouTube videos showcasing how easy it is to make tasty, wholesome and sometimes indulgent vegan food. We spoke to Roxy about her proudest moments and the badass women that inspire her.
1. What advice would you give to any young women out there looking to start up something of their own?
Have a plan in place and a clear vision of what it is you want to achieve. But don’t let the details get in the way of you just going for it. It’s really important to keep learning about your audience and customers so you can continually adapt, ensuring you reach your end goal. Take on feedback and other people’s opinions when you see fit, otherwise just follow your gut. And rest assured that very few people actually know how to start a business, they just go for it and learn along the way, which is exactly what we’ve done with So Vegan.
2. Tell us something you’re proud of achieving.
Starting So Vegan has to be my proudest achievement. When we decided to launch the recipe channel, we had no idea what we were letting ourselves in for. Halfway through filming our first recipe we realised we didn’t have the right pan to work on the hob, so we had to down tools and rush out to the shops. It was a bit all over the place at the start, but we’ve worked hard to refine the process and I think it really shows in the content we now produce. The whole process has been an unbelievable journey and we’ve been learning every step of the way. It’s incredible to see our videos reaching millions of people all over the world, and it’s massively rewarding to see so many of our followers recreating our recipes at home because it illustrates the positive impact we’re having with So Vegan.
3. Who are some of your favourite inspiring females
I’ve spent a lot of my adult life working in music studios surrounded by men so it’s been a truly amazing experience meeting so many strong and passionate women in the vegan community. I feel empowered more than ever by their support and strength, and I feel honoured to be standing alongside them. Then there’s also my mum, who came to the UK from Poland in the 80s. Despite not knowing the language, she brought up my brother and I all on her own and overcame huge challenges to pursue a successful career in music. Her passion and fight has instilled in me an immense drive that pushes me to work hard every day. And last but by no means least, Beyonce! If I'm ever worried about something, I think to myself: "What would Beyonce do?", and the answer always becomes clear…!
4. Can you tell us about any upcoming projects
We recently launched our new t-shirt range, Plant Revolution, which is designed to raise awareness of the plant-based movement and offers a more sustainable alternative to high street fashion. Oh, and 50% of profits go to charity! The response has been amazing and we’ve already shipped t-shirts to people all around the world. We’ve also got some really exciting projects lined up but unfortunately I can’t spill the beans on them just yet! And of course we’ll be working on tons of delicious and easy recipes so make sure you stay tuned.
